When Marvel Comics suspended operation in 1958, several artists were left scrambling to find work anywhere that they could. One of the jobs that Joe picked up during this time was illustrating a childrens encyclopedia.  Harwyn Picture Encyclopedia was a 12 volume set issued in 1958 and distributed in A&P Supermarkets. Joe's work appeared in volumes III - XII. Many great artists also had their work published in these books including Bill Elder, Angelo Torres and Reed Crandall.  Shown below is all of Joe's work from Volumes III & IV and part of V.
