Birthday wishes for June go out to my son Joe Jr., and my 2 grandsons Chris and Trevor. Many thanks to Mary Mulligan for continuing to send the Sunday Spider-man comic strips my way, and to Gary from Krypton Komics for more books for my collection.

Would you believe that I write an article in a local newspaper: The Lincoln Eagle which is published semi-monthly in our area entitled  "The Saugerties Scene" about old time Saugerties.  You can read my April/May article below.

The Saugerties Scene - by Joe Sinnott
(the following article appeared in The Lincoln Eagle newspaper April/May 2008 issue)  GATHER 'ROUND CHILDREN AND YOU SHALL HEAR OF THE IRISH IN GLENERIE AND THEIR BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS.  Yes, the Irish were a big part of the little community of Glenerie, just south of the village of Saugerties.  The prominent 'Lead Mill' was founded by Colonel edward Clark in 1835 to produce 'White Lead'. The small village also included a chapel, homes and naturally a company store. The Irish in 1835, on their arrival at Ellis Island, were directed to Glenerie where others of their countrymen had already migrated to. One of these was Thomas Sinnott from County wexford, who arrived in 1851 at the age of 23. He soon married elizabeth Winters, who had also come from ireland on the same vovage. The Sinnott's began their long association in Saugerties until the present day - 157 years! This writer's grandfather, John Sinnott, was born in 1861 near the beautiful falls and lead mill. Life in the mid 1800's was extremely harsh, working conditions at the mill were hard, dangerous and of course financially unrewarding.  The irish did have their light moments however, with their weekend soccer games, dancing and music at the social hall. Mostly Catholic, the Irish made the long trek into St.Mary's Church in saugerties for Sunday Mass by horse, bur more often by walking. Just look around the church cemetery and you'll see the names of those who braved all kinds of conditions to get to Mass on Sunday. The names on the stones are etched for all posterity: Murphy, O'Brien, Kelly, Duffy, Flynn, Flanagan, O'Hara, the Sinnott's of course, and so many others. They had come from the famine hit counties of Ireland in the early 1800's to the promise of a new and fruitful life in America. Through the port of Cork, came these young hopefuls from counties Kilkenny, Galway, Limerick, donegal, tipperary, wexford, Down, Clair and others. As the years passed many left the 'Lead Mill' and Glenerie and moved into the village of Saugerties. My grandfather married Annie Burke from Quarryville and opened a hotel, now the Central Hotel Antiques on Partition Street. The hotel was in the Sinnott family until 1920. Another interesting note about the 'Ulster White Lead Mill' was the company nickname - it was called 'The Slow Kill', due to the adverse effects of the lead on the workers. Yes, the Irish in Glenerie in the 1800's had their moments of joy, but their was so much of the blood, sweat and tears. Their descendants are scattered all over the area, contributing as their pioneering forebearers did, to the history of Saugerties and America.
